Add or change a property name
Maintaining a comprehensive and high standard for naming streets and numbering properties is important as it allows:
- Emergency services to find a property quickly
- Mail to be delivered efficiently
- Reliable delivery of services and products
- Consistency of property based information across local government and the community of users for addresses
Adding a name to an address
If a property has a number, you can add a name to it without applying to us. If you decide to do this, it will not be considered part of the official address, and Royal Mail will not recognise the name.
If you wish the name to form part of the official address you will need to use our service to rename the property.
You need to be careful that there is not a property with a similar name nearby.
If your property already has a number, you can not replace this with a name. The name must be in addition to the number. This means you must still display the number and always use it in the address. For example:

Changing the name of a property
If there is no number, the name forms part of the official address.
If you wish to change this you will need to apply to us.
Once you have contacted us, we will check your proposed name(s) and advise you of our addressing decision, and any fees you will need to pay.
