Advice and guidance on the Building Control process

It is important that any work controllable under the building regulations has an application.

If you know the Building Control process:

Go straight to the application forms.

If you need more in depth help:

Step one -  find out if you need approval

Check if you need building regulation approval before you start.

Step two -  choose your application type:

This is the most thorough option. You need to submit plans and constructional details for checking and approval. Decisions are made within five weeks, or two months with your consent. Building notice applications are only suitable for smaller projects. You can start work two days after your notice has been submitted. You are not required to submit plans with this application. You can apply for regularisation - approval for work already carried out without consent. Only work carried out after 11 November 1985 can be approved in this way.

Step three - get a fee quote

If you know your application type, submit a fee quote request form.

Step four - submit an application

If you already have a fee quote, submit an application form.

Step five - make a payment

If you have already submitted an application form, make a payment.

Step six - what happens next

Find out what happens next once your application is registered and how to request a site inspection.
