How your school or college will support you into work or training

Schools should provide support to help you prepare for work. This could involve:

  • develop a CV
  • learn how to job search
  • complete application forms
  • prepare for interviews
  • mentoring or coaching
  • speakers to the school
  • work experience placements
  • access to or information on careers fairs

Schools should be able to provide information on:

  • the range of education and training options available
  • apprenticeships
  • vocational pathways

Most colleges are now running employability courses. These are aimed at giving commercial work experience (not in the college or supported setting). They should be carried out regularly over a period of time, rather than a one off work experience. The courses aim to teach you the skills you need to become independent enough to gain employment.

Careers advisors

Most schools and colleges have a careers advisor who can talk you through your options after school or college. Speak to a teacher or receptionist of your school/college to find out who your careers advisor is.
