Portage home visiting service
What is Portage?
The Christchurch area Portage Service is a home visiting educational service for children aged 1-3 years with Special Educational Needs/Disabilities (SEND) and their families.
Portage is a partnership between parents and professionals where parents take the lead role. The aim of the service is to respond with flexibility to the individual needs of each child and family, in order to equip the parents with the skills and confidence they need to help their child play, learn and gain new skills.
Who is eligible for the service?
The child must:
- have a Christchurch postcode and be aged between 1 - 3 years
- be significantly delayed in at least three areas of development by 1/2 of their chronological age or have a recognised syndrome that is likely to have a significant impact on learning and development
Parents must be willing and have the time to be available for regular home visits, and be prepared to practise agreed fun, learning activities on a daily basis
How do I find out more about the service and/or make a referral?
The Portage service has an open referral process. Parents and/or professionals who have concerns about a child’s learning and development can contact the Portage service for an initial discussion or make a direct referral (please gain parent’s permission first)
